Roots and Wings Ministry NPC is a faith-based community development project and children’s ministry, closely affiliated with YWAM Worcester. We are reaching out to a community in Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa, in which gangsterism and crime, alcohol and drug abuse, a high unemployment and school drop-out rate have an impact on most families in one way or another.
Since August 2020, we have been working with a group of 30 - 40 children between the age of two and 18, who are living in the suburbs of Esselenpark and Roodewal. Our core-group is between seven and 16 years old. The children and youth come to our home in Paglande, Worcester, in small groups of four to nine kids per afternoon from Mondays to Thursdays.
Our mission is to empower these young people spiritually, emotionally, socially, practically, and cognitively by offering them a safe environment. We want to inspire them to explore, learn, play, be creative, and grow. We hope to uplift the community by coming alongside this group of children and their families in a holistic approach, encouraging development in all aspects of life according to the Heavenly Father’s original design.
We believe in the transforming power of the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit, and we hope to invite the children into a relationship with Jesus Christ by modelling a lifestyle based on biblical principles. We are sharing His Word in discipleship lessons, always with a focus on how to apply it in our daily lives.
As “ministers of reconciliation” we work towards restored relationships with God, self, each other, and the rest of creation.
Most of our children need extra help with their basic academics. We help with schoolwork and seek, where necessary, cooperation with their primary schools.
It is our desire to create holistic learning opportunities which will help the children to grow in their emotional intelligence and social skills.
In everything we do, we want to partner with the parents, and where necessary, come alongside the families through counselling, discipleship, parenting training, and practical help.
We are working closely with “Equitots™ Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)“ in Klipheuwel (https://www.equitots.com/), and since January 2025 we have been implementing the work with horses into the daily ministry here in Worcester ourselves.
The long-term vision for Roots & Wings is a "Ministry Farm" in a rural area. A safe place, in which Kingdom-principles can be lived out practically in all aspects of life. The farm would incorporate a learning centre for children/youth who have fallen/are in danger of falling through the cracks of the education system, providing full-board during the week for a small group of students. Equine Assisted Learning will play a key-role in helping these youngsters overcome obstacles for learning and growth.
Volunteer With Us
We are looking for people who resonate with our vision and mission, and who feel called to come alongside Roots & Wings Ministry:
-
As short-term volunteers:
Would you like to be part of our daily ministry for maybe a school holiday, an internship, or as part of your Sabbatical, etc.? -
As long-term volunteers:
Working towards the future vision, we need to expand our team to cover and maximise existing areas of ministry, and (re-)establish new (or previously covered) projects we believe the Father is highlighting in this season, for example:- Reaching out to school dropouts in the morning hours, creating learning and discipleship opportunities
- Offering parent workshops, for example in biblical principles and early childhood development
- Working with children one-on-one who need more support in their academics
- Helping in the area of Equine Assisted Learning
- Ultimately setting up a space in the community for the running of the daily ministry
-
As visitors, experts, people with a passion:
- Do you have a certain skill you would like to pass on? A passion for gardening, for example? Or a topic which burns on your heart to share with a young audience?
- Do you have a passion for community development and would like to join hands for a certain project?
- Would you like to invest in this current young generation and are willing to spend some of your spare time engaging in story-telling, play, and/or crafts?
If any of this is YOU, then we would love to hear from you!
